"FUN FLY MASTERS   2006 - WELKOM
We had a great competition weekend at Welkom.  Everyone seemed pleased with the 
way it worked out, with Sportsman class taking part for the first time.  The new 
Sportsman trophy was donated by Dave Armitage who built up the whole concept of 
fun fly in South Africa over the last 16 years. Congratulations to Christopher 
Harris and Charl de Klerk, the Open Class and Sportsman Class champions.  Also 
to Piet van Niekerk   best veteran, and Silverton, the leading club. Welkom MAC 
laid on the usual excellent hospitality, and rather different weather.  A little 
rain on Saturday morning, overcast most of the weekend and variable winds, 
although never too strong.  We had a marquee out on the field so spectators, 
pilots and their aircraft could shelter from the elements when necessary.  No 
really different models, although Arne Sieling had a full size Shotgun electric 
model that demonstrated that electric is now pretty much competitive with glow. 
Not too much model destruction this year, but the Sportsmen and younger flyers 
suffered a bit more damage than I like to see. It's so hard to ignore the bomb 
and keep watching the model in the bomb drop event! One or two different events 
this year gave the pilots something to think about.  F3A where the pilots had to 
perform some aerobatic precision manoeuvres for the judges rather than flying 
against the clock.  Climb and glide - inverted, Time and spot where they had to 
land precisely at the correct time AND on the spot (just like thermal events) 
with points lost for errors in time and distance.  Limbo   but you choose the 
line height   the lower the line the more points for each successful pass.  The 
hardworking judges were Brett Black, Mike Stevens and Freek Hennop.
