Volksrust slope site

Hi John
I have attached a Google satellite map I drew up for a friend on how to get there.
Below is two options of getting there. Option 1 is for when you're in a hurry and have got everything you need. Option 2 is for if you need to stop in town for something you forgot to bring along
Option 1

  1. As you come into Volksrust from Standerton, on the sharp right-hand bend, turn left into De Kock Street. Drive the all the way up to the traffic light and zero your odometer.
  2. Turn left here towards Ermelo/Amersfoort (going straight ahead will take you to Wakkerstroom).
  3. You are now in Laingsnek Road. You can see the mountain (Tamatieberg) ahead of you. From the traffic light it is 4.1km to the entrance of Jan de Beer's farm on the left.
  4. About 150m before this gate is the road up the mountain but nowadays he keeps this gate locked permanently, so you have to enter through his farm gate and drive up a short gravel road through his premises and join up with the tar road.
  5. About a kilometer further up is another gate on the right that you enter through. There are some huts on the right here and the little black gatekeepers are usually there to receive their "toll fees" so bring some sweet and/or change along.
  6. Now just follow the road to the top.
  7. As the road levels out at the top of the mountain it splits in two again. Left takes you to the northwestern slope and right leads to the southern slope.

Option 2
  1. Instead of turning left into De Kock Street drive into town.
  2. Turn left at the BP garage at the traffic light (local Afrikaans high school is on your right here). This is the main street into town and the Spar and liquor store is in this street.
  3. I think it is the second traffic light you turn left again into Laingsnek Road (there is a Wimpy diagonally across this intersection).
  4. Travel through a couple of traffic lights and watch out for where De Kock street intersects this road. Zero your odometer at this intersection and follow the directions as above from 4.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Izak
