Directions to Silverton Gliding Club

The Silverton Gliding Club has been dodging from one field to the next recently, (Nov. 2004). It's not clear from one weekend to the next just where it is. I suppose you could try to phone Joe Coetzer -- known to his friends for reasons too complex to divulge here, as Joe Spanner -- for the latest info...083 626 2893.

Here's yet another set of directions! (dated Nov 2004)

Head north on the N1
Take N4 heading East
Take Hans Strydom off-ramp heading North
Turn right (East) into Bapsfontein road
Follow this road (turns left after +- 200m around the large field on the left) After a few turns along the field boundary it dips over a low level bridge in between some trees
Immediately to the left is a road heading steeply up. Turn up there. If you end up passing under the N4 you have gone too far.
Go through the farm gate
Drive +-200 m (?) over some rough road and then follow split in the road to the right. You will see the field within a short distance on your left. It has a large clump of trees on its NE border.

Here are some directions from Zack Pretorius, (dated Sept 2004):

From Jhb take the N1 Pietersburg highway to Pta.

After Atterbury you take the Lynnwood rd turn-off. Turn right in Lynnwood rd. It s a long way down Lynnwood, you pass Wilgers Hospital on your right, carry on untill crossing Hans Strijdom rd and also the Silver Lakes turn-off to the left. Still on Lynnwood rd ( becomes M6 ) you see a small shopping mall on the right and a tar road left saying Boschkop rd. TURN LEFT IN Bosckop rd out of Lynnwood rd AND ZERO your speedo.

1.5 km in Bosckop rd turn left in Mooiplaats dirt rd.

1.4 turn left where it says Cheviez equestrian centre ( also pylons appearing from the left right there)

500m of bone jarring dirt rd you will see two pillars and a paved entrance. DON T enter but turn 90 deg. right where it say s No Through Road !

Carry on for 1.5 km on that dirt road and then turn 90 deg right on a dirt rd. The field will then be on your left.

For Deon and the guys from Kempton direction.

Take the R21 towards Pta.

Close to the cement silos take the R25 (it makes a 180 deg so turn left towards Bapsfontein)

At the next T junction turn right.

You will pass a small centre on your left. At the next 4- way stop turn left towards Cullinan.

Carry on untill passing a Exel garage. I think it s the second tar road left after the garage. IT MUST SAY M6 ! Which is lynnwood rd!

Carry on until you see the small shopping centre on your left. Turn right into Boschkop tar road and follow instruction and distances as explained above.

Updated for new field...don't know how good these are now, read them in conjunction with the above.

Directions start at the 4-way robot corner of Hans Strijdom and Lynnwood road ( Lynnwood also the M6 Onbekend road ), reset speedometer to 0 crossing Hans Strijdom or turning into the M6 towards the east ( away from City Centre )

To get to this 4 way crossing from Jnb, take the N1 North, then the Witbank highway towards Witbank, then the Hans Strjidom turn off, at the stop sign a RIGHT TURN (AWAY FROM OUR PRESENT FIELD!), you'll then be crossing the highway, the first robot turn left into M6 Onbekend road and set speedo to 0

At 5.1km turn left into Boschkop road Speedo reading 7.2km left into Mooiplaas road ( Dirt road ) Speedo reading 8.65 km left into dirt road - says "Chavid Equestrian Centre" ( Pylon also at that corner ) " " 9.3 km right into road saying " No Through Road ", carry on for +_ 1km. You ll see open field on your right, turn right down two track road along a fence.

(Directions kindly provided by John Monk)

Take the higway to Pietersburg from Johannesburg
Turn off on the N4 towards Witbank.
Turn off at the Hans Strydom off ramp, turn left (North) at the stop.
At the next 4-way stop (approx 3-400 metres) turn right into the Bronkhorstspruit road.
Approx 300 metres down the road on the RHS is a sand road, follow it for about 30 metres, them turn left to pass through a farmers front garden (seriously!).
On the far side of the garden is the entrance to the field.
You pass over a hump and turn immediately right and you will see eveybody (unless, of course, you are first there).
